Fallout 76 will be a nuclear wasteland worth exploring

Leading up to E3, rumors flew in every direction about Fallout 76. Some thought it would be a base-building spinoff that refined the settlement features in Fallout 4 while others thought it would be a multiplayer survival game. The real answer turned out to be a little bit of both. Fallout 76 is a multiplayer survival game with settlement features, and according to Bethesda, the map is a whopping four times bigger than that of its predecessor. Let’s take a look at the nuts and bolts of our new apocalyptic wasteland.

That last game, naturally, is the most relevant, and the initial failures of most games are eerily similar. Like Fallout 76, The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) was slammed for its swarm of bugs, spotty launch-window connectivity, and a general sense that bringing the franchise online had dispelled the magic. Fallout 76 has received a harsher Metacritic average of 55, but ESO’s average of 71 paled in comparison to Skyrim’s stellar average of 94 on PC at release.

Until then, though, the robots watch. Trapped in pointless routines, they wander through a broken wasteland, scrambling for purpose, but lacking an essential human spark. They ask people to do things, but can’t provide a meaningful reason why, waiting for some sort of world-saving systems upgrade that’ll probably never come. The idea behind an online co-op Fallout game is pretty great. The problem with being online-only, however, is that it restricts the game in ways both big and small. For one thing, it makes the game much less accessible especially to disabled gamers who no longer have VATS, a combat system in previous Fallouts that slows time, allowing you to line up shots before resuming combat.

These modern games blended culture from 1950s America with wastelands of nuclear enemies. They encouraged exploration, ingenuity, and hours of inventory management. It’s about what you can find and what you turn it into, with “Fallout 4” placing a new emphasis on building shelters and even communities. That’s likely what inspired “Fallout 76,” a game that takes the entire experience online.

The other issue with Fallout 76's online is the general stability of it. I'm not too down on the occasional disconnect in an online game; it happens, especially around launch. What I resent is losing time or resources to those disconnects. I was completing a random event in one town with two other players when I disconnected the first time. Upon reloading, I was no longer in the event, or even in the same area, meaning all the effort (and bullets) that I used to get to that point were lost.
