Ken Ungerecht’s God Theories , 2nd Edition addresses the rhetoric in modern society of religion and science as “irreconcilable antagonists of each other.” Ungerecht takes a different approach, believing that in the end, science itself will play an “integral role” in proving that religion is not obsolete.


He finds it vital that science and religion come to understand and accept each other-and to “learn . . . that the other functions in a perfectly legitimate domain of consciousness.” This is an understanding that must come “sooner rather than later,” as the world “is not in a position to put up with their squabbling much longer.” The world in general has some “exceedingly serious issues that need immediate attention and these can be dealt with much more easily without that distraction.”


Ungerecht illustrates that each side of the debate has some important lessons to learn. In the case of science , it is important to “recognize there are questions for which reasonable answers will almost certainly never be found. on occasion, they need to pause and take a moment and learn to bask in the glow and wonder of mystery.” Religions lack a vital understanding that “the phrase ‘within reason’ applies to them as much as it does to everybody else.” Indeed, religions have inevitably played a greater role in making themselves obsolete than science has, as generations have been taught to question and reason through the scientific method , and have made answers like “‘Because I said so’;” “‘Just have faith’;” and “‘Because it’s written in this book'” unacceptable to modern society.
