According to a study done by researchers at New York University (NYU) gum inflammation may be one of the reasons behind Alzheimer's disease. The researchers studied the relationship between cognitive function and periodontal inflammation over a period of 20 years with 152 individuals to arrive at this conclusion.


Another study conducted by The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) School of Medicine and Dentistry suggested that people with adverse dental health might be at a greater risk of Alzheimer's disease. In this research, brain samples from ten patients with dementia were compared to brain samples from ten patients without dementia. It was found that patients with dementia had presence of bacterium Porphyromonas gingivalis in their brains that is commonly associated with gum disease.
